Address: 3 and 15 West Lane
In the heart of Canary Wharf, a new addition to the skyline is making waves with its sustainable design and vibrant community spirit. The 3 & 15 West Lane aparthotel, part of a car-free neighbourhood called The Lanes, is a testament to the future of urban living.
HTA Design, renowned for their innovative approach, have drawn inspiration for this project from the lost warehouse architecture of the former Isle of Dogs docklands and the loft-style vernacular of New York. The buildings, predominantly brick with pre-cast concrete detailing, seamlessly blend with the area's heritage without resorting to pastiche.
The 297 aparthotel units offer extensive shared amenities, including lounges, co-working areas, private dining rooms, and three roof terraces, creating a rich, adaptable living environment. The apartments, designed for both short and long stays, are located above ground-floor retail and restaurant units, adding to the neighbourhood's vitality and local economy.
Sustainability is at the forefront of 3 & 15 West Lane's design. Strategies include managing solar gain through varied window reveal depths and maximizing natural light, promoting active frontage and year-round public engagement within a landscaped, pedestrianized urban realm. The buildings have achieved BREEAM 'Excellent', underscoring their commitment to green design.
Union Square, located at the foot of the buildings, is a meanwhile space with a minimum lifespan of five years. It features a hard-surfaced events area, bleacher seating, edible planting, and an informal play space within naturalistic planting, enhancing the area's biodiversity and improving connectivity across the estate.
The project complements nearby Eden Dock, developed in partnership with the Eden Project and Howells. It is part of HTA's ongoing collaboration with Canary Wharf Group, adding another successful chapter to their shared vision of creating sustainable, vibrant communities.
With its mix of sustainable design, green spaces, and a lively community atmosphere, 3 & 15 West Lane aparthotel is setting a new standard for urban living in Canary Wharf. It's not just a place to live, but a place to thrive.
