In a heartwarming event at the Greater Vancouver Zoo in Aldergrove, B.C., a new addition has been making heads turn. On August 5, a baby alpaca named Carmela was born, and since then, she has been capturing the hearts of visitors and staff alike.

Carmela, who is also known as a cria, is a delightful caramel-coloured bundle of joy. Her name, fittingly, was chosen to reflect her unique colouring. The father of this adorable baby is named Titus, and her big brother is Tauntaun. Other alpacas at the zoo include her father, Titus, and her brother, Tauntaun.

Martha McIntosh, the lead keeper at the Greater Vancouver Zoo, shared that guests were able to witness a special moment as Carmela was born. Since then, she has been closely cared for by her mother, Penelope. The bond between mother and daughter has been a sight to behold, with Carmela finding her stride after leaning against Penelope.

However, Carmela's journey to her feet hasn't always been smooth. She has stumbled a few times before finding her balance, but her timid yet curious personality shines through as she navigates her new world. Visitors can catch a glimpse of Carmela unsteadily getting to her feet in a video shared by the Greater Vancouver Zoo.

Carmela's arrival has been a source of joy for the zoo community. With her caramel-coloured coat and endearing personality, it's no wonder that she has quickly become a favourite among staff and visitors alike. The report about Carmela was first published on September 20, 2025, by Fatima Raza of The Canadian Press.

The Greater Vancouver Zoo is home to a variety of animals, and the birth of Carmela is just one of many exciting events that take place there. For those interested in visiting, the zoo is open daily and offers a variety of exhibits and experiences for all ages.
