AMC's Journey Towards a Zero-Carbon Future: Our Initiatives Driving Climate Change Mitigation in the Northeastern Region

The Appalachian Mountain Club (AMC) is embarking on an ambitious journey towards a greener future, with a strategic priority to protect critical landscapes for the well-being of people and the planet.

In this pursuit, AMC has created the Climate and Conservation Fund, designed to support investments that advance emission reductions. The fund has financed numerous projects, including the installation of new EV charging stations at Mohican Outdoor Center and Noble View Outdoor Center, solar thermal hot water systems at Galehead Hut, and solar panel enhancements at Madison Spring Hut. These initiatives have resulted in significant reductions in carbon emissions, with the solar panel upgrade at Madison Spring Hut increasing energy savings by 20%.

AMC's net zero strategic plan includes a promise to annually offset any remaining emissions through carbon offsets. The fund finances various offset projects, such as electrified fleet upgrades, like the Ford Lightning, an all-electric model, replacing a gas-powered truck. Many AMC lodges and huts feature heat pumps, induction stoves, insulated building envelopes, and electric vehicles.

The Climate and Conservation Fund has also financed building envelope upgrades at Pinkham Notch to decrease propane heating consumption, and solar energy powers AMC's entire High Mountain Hut system.

Net zero emissions refer to a goal where an organization's total greenhouse gas emissions are balanced by removing an equivalent amount from the atmosphere. This is a more ambitious goal than carbon neutrality, which balances emissions by offsetting equivalent removals, but does not necessarily require a significant reduction in direct emissions. AMC aims to achieve net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.

AMC helps other organizations balance their emissions through forest carbon offset projects in the 100-Mile-Wilderness in Maine. The organization also plans to reduce emissions 45% below its 2010 emission levels by 2030 and eliminate at least 90% of emissions by 2050. This plan follows the carbon mitigation hierarchy, a strategic approach for reducing emissions, which includes eliminating and reducing emissions, investing in renewable energy sources, and counteracting unavoidable emissions with carbon offsets.

In addition to these efforts, AMC launched its first all-electric boat at Three Mile Island Camp in New Hampshire in 2024, further demonstrating its commitment to a greener future. The goal is to envision a world in which nature is healthy, loved, and protected by its 150th anniversary.
