Another successful yield of sage in Freital has been reported!
In the picturesque town of Freital, Germany, the Bombastus Works have been cultivating and producing sage tea for an impressive 111 years. The company's unique approach to tea production, which combines traditional methods with modern agricultural technology, has made it a standout in the industry.
For over a century, sage has been harvested at the Bombastus Works, initially by hand. Up to 50 women would pick the top shoots by hand from July to September, a labour-intensive process that took approximately 50 harvest helpers to harvest just one hectare of sage. The sage plants, including both flowers and the tips of the shoots with stems and leaves, were carefully harvested and dried in the attic of the main house at the Bombastus Works.
Fast forward to today, and the sage harvesting process at Bombastus Works has undergone significant changes. Modern technology is now employed, with a special tractor used to harvest one hectare of sage in about four hours. However, the company continues to handpick certain leaves to produce premium-grade "Sage shoot tip tea hand harvest." This traditional method represents a small but distinct segment of their sales, accounting for about 1.6% in 2024, and is sold primarily through pharmacies and online.
The evolution of sage tea production at Bombastus Works is not just about harvesting. The company also processes the entire sage plant—from root to flower—highlighting a comprehensive approach to the plant beyond just the leaves for tea. This full-plant processing reflects technological and methodological advancements that go beyond the harvesting process.
Before the sage is harvested, the shoots need to be dried first. This drying process is crucial, as it affects the essential oil content of the sage, which in turn impacts the flavour and potency of the tea. The company's understanding of these factors is supported by scientific research, ensuring they produce high-quality sage tea.
Today, the Bombastus Works cultivate sage on eight hectares, yielding approximately 2,800 kilograms of fresh tea from one hectare of sage harvest. The company's dedication to quality and innovation is evident in their commitment to both traditional methods and modern technology.
On September 5th, the Bombastus Works will be opening their doors to interested individuals for a day dedicated to tea production. This is a unique opportunity to learn more about the company's rich history, their innovative approach to sage tea production, and the blend of tradition and modernity that makes Bombastus Works a leader in the industry.
