Aschaffenburg Launches 'abpflastern' Project to Green Urban Areas
Aschaffenburg has launched the 'abpflastern' project, a nationwide initiative focused on climate change mitigation by integrating more nature into urban areas. The first phase involved the redesign of the square at Ulmenweg in Nilkheim, with residents invited to participate in future transformations.
The 'abpflastern' initiative encourages all Aschaffenburg residents to suggest de-sealed areas online. The competition runs until October 31, 2025, with monthly 'Star of the Month' awards recognizing the best proposals. The overall winner will be announced in November 2025.
The Ulmenweg square redesign entailed removing 315 sqm of sealed surface. The old concrete and asphalt were replaced with a lush lawn, three new trees, and comfortable benches. The historic fountain at the square was retained, adding to the charm of the revamped space.
The project aims to improve the urban climate and enhance the quality of life for residents. By replacing sealed surfaces with greenery, the initiative helps reduce heat island effects and promotes biodiversity in cities.
The 'abpflastern' project is a long-term competition organized by students nationwide. Aschaffenburg is at the forefront of this movement, with the Ulmenweg square redesign marking the city's commitment to climate change forecasting and creating greener, more livable urban spaces. Residents are encouraged to participate and help shape the future of their city.
