AT Webinar Explores Future of Sustainable, Regenerative Architecture
A recent webinar hosted by the Architectural Technologist (AT) association explored the future of sustainable and regenerative architecture. The event, titled 'Beyond Carbon Metrics: Delivering Regenerative Architecture', featured presentations from industry experts including Martin Knight, Ben Hancock, Ella Thorns, Colin Davis, and James Lord.
James Lord kicked off the event by showcasing three examples of landscape-led regenerative design. These included the transformation of Kidbrooke Park in Greenwich, a new garden for Regents Park, and Eden Dock. Lord, the architect behind Kidbrooke Park, highlighted the project's improvements in ecological and amenity value.
Ben Hancock, representing Oscar Acoustics, argued for the importance of acoustic comfort in regenerative design. He presented SonaSpray, a sustainable acoustic solution, as a key consideration in architectural planning. The webinar also delved into measuring the full impact of architectural work, extending beyond embodied carbon to include social and ecological value.
Martin Knight presented two retrofit case studies, demonstrating the potential of nature-based solutions in regenerating buildings and sites. Ella Thorns, from Studio Bark, shared the practice's regenerative toolkit and Small Carbon, an online carbon counting tool for small-to-medium-sized practices. Colin Davis presented contrasting approaches to regenerative retrofit, showcasing emerging tools and methods for regenerative design at the earliest stages of planning.
The AT webinar successfully explored how architects can move beyond carbon metrics to deliver genuinely sustainable and regenerative projects. By considering acoustic comfort, social and ecological value, and employing nature-based solutions, architects can create more holistic and resilient built environments. The event provided valuable insights and practical tools for practitioners looking to embrace regenerative design.
