Ballermann undergoes comprehensive reconstruction

Major Overhaul Planned for Playa de Palma

The popular seaside resort of Playa de Palma in Mallorca is set for a substantial $300 million revamp over the next decade, following a 35-point plan announced by Palma City Hall. The initiative aims to enhance the area's livability and address longstanding issues, such as housing shortages and mobility.

Mayor Jaime Martínez revealed the ambitious project to journalists in the Spanish Mediterranean island's capital. The city administration intends to implement the plan progressively, sourcing funding from its own coffers.

The revitalization effort includes a variety of measures to transform the Playa into a more attractive and livable destination. Outdated one- and two-star hotels will be converted into residential spaces, complemented by new housing developments in the region behind the infamous Ballermann strip.

Enhancing mobility is another key focus, with plans to integrate the area into the public bike-sharing system "BiciPalma" and construct park-and-ride parking lots connected to a proposed rail line by the Balearic government. A significant portion of the investment, €80 million, will be dedicated to the beautification of the second and third sea lines, which encompasses renewing streets and sidewalks.

Engagement with industry associations and local residents is crucial to the project. Discussions will serve to refine and finalize various aspects of the revamp, which seeks to balance efforts for sustainable tourism development while addressing housing shortages and poverty concerns.

Past endeavors aimed at redeveloping the Playa have faced challenges in implementation. Notably, ongoing renovations of the sewer system and street lighting along the coast have been paused during the summer to minimize disruptions for tourists. The final construction phase is expected to take place during the coming winter.
