Bicycle-friendly Aschaffenburg continues to be a noteworthy municipality
In the picturesque city of Aschaffenburg, a significant milestone was reached as the city was recertified as a "Bike-Friendly Municipality" in 2024. This recognition, bestowed by the Allgemeiner Deutscher Fahrrad-Club (ADFC), marks the city's commitment to promoting cycling and improving cycling infrastructure.
The city's dedication to cycling promotion is evident in its annual continuous funding of around 1 million euros. This support has facilitated numerous projects aimed at enhancing the urban network of main cycle routes, connecting city districts and neighbouring municipalities.
Recent completed projects include the expansion and renovation of the Main cycle path, the marking of the cycle street in Auweg, and the new construction of the pedestrian and cycle path on B 26 Darmstädter Straße by the State Building Authority Aschaffenburg. These improvements have contributed to an overall increase in safety and riding comfort along the main cycle routes.
To commemorate the 10th anniversary of the city's cycling concept, an image film was created and can be viewed on the city's social media channels. The film showcases the city's commitment to cycling and the progress made in creating a bike-friendly environment.
The city's status as a "Bike-Friendly Municipality" is valid until 2031, providing a long-term framework for continued investment in cycling infrastructure. The city's membership in the AGFK (Arbeitsgemeinschaft der Fahrradfreundlichen Kommunen Bayern), which includes numerous cities, municipalities, and districts, further supports this commitment.
The AGFK's Working Group of Bike-Friendly Municipalities in Bavaria held a specialist excursion in Aschaffenburg in July 2025. The event, attended by 35 Bavarian cycling experts from various regions, provided an opportunity to learn about the framework conditions, implementations, and current projects in Aschaffenburg related to cycling promotion.
Photos taken during the excursion were credited to the City of Aschaffenburg, offering a visual record of the city's ongoing efforts to create a bike-friendly environment. State Minister Bernreiter's certificate was presented to Mayor Herzing by Holger Schmidt, the deputy managing director of AGFK, during the event.
As of 2025, over 70 cities, municipalities, and districts within the AGFK have been awarded "Bike-Friendly Municipality" status, reflecting the growing movement towards sustainable and cycling-friendly urban development in Bavaria. The city council in the Planning and Traffic Senate was informed of these developments in an annual progress report.
Cooperation in the Cycling Forum with representatives of society ensures transparency and involvement on a broad basis, ensuring that the city's cycling initiatives align with the needs and preferences of its residents. The overall process of designing a bike-friendly city is a long-term task, but with continued support and commitment, Aschaffenburg is well on its way to becoming an even more bike-friendly city.
