Bristol's River Malago Set for Restoration in Bedminster Green Scheme

Bristol City Council has submitted plans to restore a section of River Malago as part of the Bedminster Green regeneration scheme. The project aims to enhance access to the river, reduce flood risk, and boost biodiversity.

The proposed improvements include a new seating area and an accessible path and boardwalk to make the river's edge more accessible. The Environment Agency has planned to bring a part of the river above ground and restore it to its natural form to reduce flooding and support local wildlife. Restoration measures involve altering the river's flow speed, widening the river corridor, and removing non-native species. The old penstock structure and historic channel walls will be restored to celebrate Bristol's industrial heritage. If approved, construction will begin in phases from 2023, coordinated with other Bedminster Green works. The project aims to create an extra 2,226m3 of flood storage by lowering ground levels, preventing flooding in the area. Metal grid bars, or trash screens, will be installed to trap debris and prevent blockages where the river flows back underground.

If approved, the River Malago restoration project promises to create high-quality green space for residents, reduce flood risk, and celebrate Bristol's industrial heritage. The project is set to begin in 2023, coordinated with other Bedminster Green works.
