Bristol's River Malago to Get Major Revamp for Biodiversity, Flood Defense, and Heritage Celebration
Bristol is set to transform part of its River Malago, with plans to reduce flood risk, boost biodiversity, and celebrate its industrial heritage. If approved, work will commence in phases from 2023, aligning with other Bedminster Green projects.
The project's core aim is to restore the river's natural state, allowing for a richer variety of plants and wildlife. A significant aspect involves bringing a section of the river above ground and returning it to its natural form. To prevent blockages where the river flows back underground, metal grid bars, or trash screens, will be installed.
Studio Weave, the architect group behind the redesign, has proposed creating a new seating area, accessible path, and boardwalk along the river. The project will also honour Bristol's industrial past by restoring the old penstock structure and enhancing historic channel walls. Additionally, it will create an extra 2,226m3 of flood storage to mitigate flood risk.
If approved, the River Malago project promises to enhance local biodiversity, reduce flooding risk, and celebrate Bristol's industrial heritage. With work scheduled to begin in phases from 2023, coordinated with other Bedminster Green projects, the city looks forward to a revitalised river and improved green space.
