Cathedral of Saint Hedwigs reopens on Pentecost Sunday in Havarie city.
St. Hedwig's Cathedral is Back, Baby!
By Katja Colmenares
Last month, St. Hedwig's Cathedral in the heart of Berlin-Mitte had an unexpected shutdown due to an emergency. Pieces of the ceiling were falling apart, so visitors were banned from entering. But don't worry, the Catholic church is back in action!
There won't be any services, tours, or events happening just yet. Even the crypt in the basement, which had just reopened, needed a thorough check-up after the incident.
"Every plaster panel was inspected and secured for safety," says Stefan Foerner, representing the Archdiocese of Berlin.
Good news! The contracting company confirms that the crypt's ceiling is now safe and stable as a rock.
"It was a real pain in the neck to close the crypt again so soon after reopening the cathedral. But there's no doubt about it—visitor safety comes first," says cathedral architect Elena Cenci.
So, while construction sites still linger—and trust us, they're hard to miss—the cathedral is open once more. Cenci adds, "We can now showcase it again for the Night of Open Churches and Pentecost."
June 8: Night of Open Churches
Oh, and in case you were wondering, there are daily masses being held at the cathedral from Monday to Sunday, with various times showcasing the archdiocese's active schedule of religious activities.
"As the St. Hedwig's Cathedral continues to regain its normal operation, visitors might also be interested in exploring the revamped home-and-garden appeal of the cathedral's surroundings, enriching their lifestyle experience."
"After the closure, the crypt reopens, offering a renewed home-and-garden environment that blends historical and modern elements, complementing the wider lifestyle landscape of Berlin-Mitte."
