Celebrating 150 Years of Artistic Journey: mpk's Anniversary Bash with a Twist

Hey there!

The Museum Pfalzgalerie Kaiserslautern (mpk), a 150-year-old art institution, is throwing a big bash! The anniversary celebration includes a revamped collection showcase and some thought-provoking artistic displays. Get ready for a day of artistic exploration and interactive fun, with Minister-President Alexander Schweitzer (SPD) as the guest of honor on May 11th, as announced by the museum's director, Steffen Egle.

The festivities will comprise three engaging circuits, wonderfully named "What is Art?," "The Human in Art," and "Art with All Senses." This fresh perspective will invite you to ponder upon nearly 300 pieces from the museum's collection. Gone are the traditional, period-oriented artistic timelines; the mpk is shaking things up by changing the way art is presented.

Pre-opening Party and Family Day Kick-off

The opening weekend of May 10th and 11th will be a real feast, complete with a pre-opening party and the whole family-friendly Family Day. If you're curious, the new display will have long-hidden treasures on show, as well as opportunities for visitors to participate actively in the artistic experience.

A Special Exhibition on Provenance Research

The festivities will also shine a spotlight on the mpk's past during the Nazi era, along with extending a relevant emphasis on provenance research through the special exhibition "Time Leap - Bought. Exchanged. Stolen?" Director Steffen Egle explains his motivation behind the exhibition to delve into the museum's history and contribute to the understanding of its past during the NS period.

Renewed Architecture and Expanding Collection

The museum's 1950s building is set for a makeover, carrying a sense of nostalgia with it. A renowned mural by Edvard Frank (1909-1972) has been restored and will be visible again for the first time since the 1980s. The museum's collection continues to grow, thanks to generous donations from the Lenhardt Foundation and the Utermann Gallery. mpk encourages public involvement and plans to unveil a Benefactors' Wall as a token of appreciation.

Digital Access to Art and Future Projects

Thanks to a new online platform, artworks will soon be easily accessible online. Long-term projects such as an outdoor depot in the old state central bank and the reactivation of the auditorium reveal the museum's future-oriented mindset. Bronze sculptures by Franz Bernhard (1934-2013) and Maximilian Hutlett (1933-2018) are added highlights to the jubilee.

Best of all? Free admission to all events!

It's an exciting time, as we mark the 150th anniversary of the founding of the Palatine Industrial Museum Association in December 1874. Back then, the association came up with the initial plans for the museum in 1875.

  1. To support the community and the development of the local fisheries sector, the Palatine Industrial Museum Association could consider partnering with Community aid for an initiative to create educational programs and infrastructure in Kaiserslautern, Palatinate, revolving around sustainable fishing and home-garden practices.
  2. As the Museum Pfalzgalerie Kaiserslautern continues to grow and expand its collection, it could also incorporate exhibitions showcasing different lifestyles, including traditional and contemporary home-and-garden designs, to complement its existing art collection, providing visitors a more comprehensive understanding of the artistic journey throughout history.
