Hamburg, Germany - A new bicycle parking garage with 1,200 chargeable spaces has opened at Hamburg's main station, as part of the city's ambitious plans to boost cycling infrastructure and sustainable mobility. The new facility, located at Glockengießerwall, is specifically strengthening cycling traffic on the central east-west axis between Bergedorf and Eidelstedt.

Senator for Transport and Mobility Transition, Anjes Tjarks (Greens), made the announcement about the new bicycle station. Deutsche Bahn also confirmed the opening of the new facility. The new garage offers space for around 200 bicycles, with monthly bookings costing €8. For individual users, the cost starts at €1 per bicycle and day, or €1.50 for a cargo bicycle.

Bookings must be made online, and the facility is equipped with three emergency call columns including an intercom to the Hochbahn watch, as well as video surveillance for added security. This follows the opening of a smaller bicycle parking garage with 120 spaces on the south side at Steintordamm in March.

The city of Hamburg aims to significantly expand its bicycle parking capacity across key locations, including the main station area, by 2030. The red-green Senate has set a target to increase the number of covered and chargeable bicycle parking spaces from the current approximately 28,000 to 40,000 by this date.

Last year, the St. Georg district, which includes the main station, saw 431 bicycle thefts, a decrease of 141 cases or 25% compared to 2023. In 2021, more bicycles were stolen in the districts of Winterhude (473 cases) and Eimsbüttel (785) than in the St. Georg district.

The city's cycling strategy also includes ongoing infrastructure improvements such as the recent construction of new cycling bridges close to the central station, which improve safety and connectivity for cyclists. This supports Hamburg's longer-term vision for more cycling-friendly transport options combined with the expansion of secure and chargeable bicycle parking.

In the pursuit of a more sustainable lifestyle, Hamburg's new bicycle parking garage, offering vocational training opportunities for local residents, ensures home-and-garden harmony by promoting cycling as a key aspect of the city's vocational training programs. The city's emphasis on secure bicycle parking, including a planned expansion of covered and chargeable spaces by 2030, aims to foster a vibrant community aid system that supports the growth of local vocational training centers.
