Clean-up efforts led by volunteers in Lahnufer and its nearby river.
In the heart of Germany, the City of Marburg and the German Life Saving Association (DLRG) joined forces to organise the annual 'Clean Lahn' action day. This year's event, combined with the initiative 'LahnCleanUp', saw around 60 volunteers brave the river and its surroundings to combat littering in public spaces on what is today.
The volunteers, comprising members of DLRG, bsj Marburg, and the Marburger Kanusportler association, were equipped with collection equipment provided by the DBM, including tongs, gloves, and rubbish bags. Divers and motorboat crews cleared the river and fairway of bulky waste, while others scoured the riverbanks and surrounding paths, meadows, and bushes for litter.
The day's efforts resulted in the collection of a total of 470 kilograms of waste. Among the items found were a bicycle, old tires, a sleeping bag, and shoes, testament to the growing problem of carelessly discarded rubbish in cities and the environment.
Less rubbish was found this year compared to previous years, a promising sign of the impact of these annual clean-up actions. After the event, all waste was collected, weighed, and disposed of appropriately by the DBM.
Councillor Kirsten Dinnebier took the time to thank the volunteers for their efforts, highlighting the importance of such initiatives in preserving the beauty and cleanliness of the Lahn river and its surroundings.
The 'Clean Lahn' action day is a crucial step in the fight against littering, with much of the collected waste ending up in rivers, polluting them and eventually reaching the seas. The initiative provides online support for registration through the LahnCleanUp, making it easy for anyone who wants to contribute to the cause.
As the world continues to grapple with the impact of pollution on our environment, initiatives like the 'Clean Lahn' action day serve as a reminder of the power of collective action in preserving our shared spaces for future generations.
