Condo unit proprietor complaining about excessively high electric bill

Rewritten Article:

A unit owner at a condominium building in Cebu City is raising concerns regarding excessive electricity bills, following a prolonged power outage in early February. In an interview on May 4, the complainant, who prefers to remain anonymous, mentioned that the Cebu Ultima Residences on Osmeña Blvd. faced a three-day blackout from February 5, which continued for over a week.

A generator was provided later, but only one out of the three elevators in the building managed to function properly.

According to the complainant, the board of directors of the building requested contributions from the unit owners to purchase a more powerful generator for around PHP 120,000. However, the new generator allegedly failed to provide a stable electricity supply and was affected by fluctuations.

The main entrance and exit of the building now display warning signs for residents' safety.

The complainant stated that their monthly electricity bill has soared to over PHP 10,000, a huge increase compared to PHP 2,500 during normal circumstances. They attributed the increase to their retirement status and reliance on a pension.

"They keep collecting money, but the money they say is just not enough," the complainant said to our website Cebu.

In another interview, Susan Bernardo from Fuente Triangle Development Corp., the developer of Ultima Residences, admitted that the building's Board of Directors took control of the electrical supply due to unpaid electricity bills totaling PHP 1.6 million accrued following Typhoon Odette in 2021.

Bernardo explained that the Ultima Residences board of directors charged the excessive electrical fees to the unit owners without their consent. She suggested addressing this issue by returning control of the building to the developer.

No recent updates have been provided to confirm whether the power issue has been fully resolved or if a more suitable generator solution has been implemented. This incident underscores difficulties in the management of condominium energy in Cebu City, particularly during extended service interruptions. For more specific technical causes, it seems engagement with building management or local utilities would be necessary, as limited public data is available.
