CopenHill: World's Tallest Climbing Wall & Ski Slope Top Waste-to-Energy Plant

CopenHill, also known as Amager Bakke, is a revolutionary waste-to-energy plant in Copenhagen that opened in 2021. Designed by BIG-Bjarke Ingels Group and other renowned firms, it embodies hedonistic sustainability and aligns with Copenhagen's goal of becoming carbon-neutral by 2025. The plant's facade features the world's tallest artificial climbing wall, standing at 85m.

CopenHill is not just an energy-generating facility; it's an urban recreation center and environmental education hub. The plant treats 440,000 tons of waste annually, producing enough clean energy to power 150,000 homes. Its most striking feature is the 9,000m2 ski slope, complete with a platter lift, carpet lifts, and a glass elevator offering views of the plant's operations. At the bottom of the slope, visitors can relax at the 600m2 après-ski bar. Non-skiers can enjoy a rooftop bar, cross-city area, climbing wall, or the highest viewing plateau in the city.

Designed by BIG-Bjarke Ingels Group, SLA, AKT, Lüchinger+Meyer, MOE, and Rambøll, CopenHill is a new breed of waste-to-energy plant that combines innovative energy production with public leisure activities. The project developer, Amager Resource Center (ARC), has created a sustainable and efficient facility that not only serves its intended purpose but also contributes to Copenhagen's urban landscape and recreational offerings.
