In the heart of New York's Central Park, the Delacorte Theater underwent a significant renovation, marking a rebirth for the iconic outdoor venue. The aim was to create an effortless yet elevated experience for both audience and staff, while maintaining a connection to the theater's rich history.

The main theatre, with its fluted, slightly tilted wood exterior, took on a sculptural, somewhat adventurous character. The extended 18ft canopy added to the welcoming feel, providing shade for theatregoers and park-strollers alike. The redwood facade was reclaimed from around 25 local disused water tanks, adding an eco-friendly touch to the renovation.

Ennead Architects, who have collaborated with The Public Theater for 25 years, were responsible for the renovation. They envisioned the Delacorte Theater as a sculptural fine-millwork piece, blending seamlessly with the park's natural surroundings. The design aimed to make it appear as if the building emerged out of the site, rather than having landed there.

The renovation project included a brand-new stage equipped with a state-of-the-art lighting design. The lighting design featured a two-tier structure for increased flexibility and practicality. The project also included a 32,475 sq ft building with 1,864 seats, ramps with enhanced accessibility, two new gates, six lighting towers with gantry beams, the back-of-house for actors and staff, and ticketing and concession desks.

The Delacorte Theater is renowned for its annual Free Shakespeare in the Park initiative, run by New York's Public Theater for over half a century. This year's production, directed by The Public Theater's associate artistic director Saheem Ali, was a gender-swapping comedy of Twelfth Night. Notable actors participating in the production included Lupita Nyong'o, Peter Dinklage, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, and Sandra Oh.

The renovation project balanced respect for the theater's history with a desire for optimism for the future. Free Shakespeare in the Park resumed at the renovated Delacorte Theater in August 2025, marking a new chapter for this beloved outdoor venue in Central Park.
