Diocese of Regensburg advocates for the refurbishment of the versatile hall at Don Bosco Centre
Title: A Worn-Out Gym in Need of a Makeover: Don Bosco Regensburg's Multi-Purpose Hall
The battered gym at Don Bosco Regensburg screams 'shabby' with its cracked floor, damaged impact protection, and torn basketball hoop nets. It's evident that this multi-purpose hall has seen better days, enduring years of intense usage, and is clearly in dire need of some TLC.
This sentiment was echoed by Dr. Roland Batz, the Vicar General of the Diocese of Regensburg, during a tour of the Don Bosco Center. The diocese has pledged to contribute 16% of the eligible renovation costs.
The Don Bosco Regensburg team expressed heartfelt gratitude for this assistance.
"We are incredibly appreciative for this support – especially considering we're unable to secure a grant from the Bavarian Youth Ring for this specific project," remarked Thomas Zintl, the center's director.
A grant from the Bavarian Youth Ring would only be feasible if the entire youth center – not just the gym – was undergoing renovation.
"Unfortunately, the gym alone doesn't meet the funding criteria," lamented Zintl. "And even with funding, the cost of refurbishing the entire youth center would be significantly more than just renovating the gym without external funding."
Apart from support from the diocese, funding for the multi-purpose hall renovation is also coming from corporate, foundation, and individual donors. One captivating opportunity is becoming a patron of a square meter of the new gym, with a 500 euro donation granting this distinction.
"A huge thank you to everyone assisting us with the renovation," said Teresa Bauer, the director of the open children and youth work at Don Bosco Regensburg. "Our multi-purpose hall is an essential hub for young people and young adults in west Regensburg."
During the center's operational hours, budding athletes can enjoy organized sports such as juggling, table tennis, volleyball, or basketball. The roomy facilities also provide flexibility for independent activities like physical exercise and socializing with friends.
Given the dearth of outdoor activities during winter months, the gym is particularly crucial, as underscored by Thomas Zintl. The renovation is scheduled to commence in spring 2026, with further gym patrons more than welcome to join in and make a difference.
- To revive the worn-out gym at Don Bosco Regensburg, the center is seeking contributions from corporate, foundation, and individual donors, including an opportunity to become a patron of a square meter of the new gym for a 500 euro donation.
- Despite the sports facilities being an essential hub for young people and young adults in west Regensburg, the gym alone does not meet the funding criteria for a grant from the Bavarian Youth Ring, making external donations crucial for its renovation.
- With the renovation of the multi-purpose hall scheduled to begin in spring 2026, the newly refurbished gym will not only serve as sports facilities but also an outdoor-living space for basketball players, providing a welcomed addition to the lifestyle options available for the community during winter months when outdoor activities are limited.
