DIY Winter Decorations: Homegrown Winter Container for the Porch

In the heart of the Midwest, Amy Draiss, affectionately known as the Hydrangea Queen, tends to a two-acre garden. With roots in family landscaping and a career at a garden center, Amy has cultivated expertise in plants, supplies, and customer relations. Since 2021, she has been sharing her love for Hydrangeas and imparting gardening wisdom through videos and social media as the Digital Community Manager at our platform.

This winter, Amy has a new project to share - creating beautiful porch pots using wintergreen branches. The project is very forgiving, and no matter how the branches are placed, a beautiful porch pot will result.

To start, forage greens from trees on your own property or purchase them from a local garden center. The largest, most erect branches, such as spruce, should be placed at the back of the container as the base. Taller branches should be placed towards the back of the container, with shorter branches near the front. Softer evergreens such as pine and cedar are great to add near the front to cascade downward and fill the pot in the front.

After arranging the branches, a bright, freshly cut winterberry branch can be added. For a final touch, a festive bow can be added. Once complete, water the pot to keep the branches moist. Continue to water weekly until the soil freezes. This type of arrangement will keep the entire winter as long as temperatures remain cool.

For those interested in DIY projects and using wintergreen branches, Sylvia Pippel, the author of the eBook "DIY Projects with Wintergreen Branches", offers valuable recommendations. So, grab your wintergreen branches and get creative! With Amy Draiss's guidance, you'll be well on your way to creating a festive and beautiful winter porch pot.
