Over a decade since their introduction, Saxony's home license plates are now a prevalent choice among drivers. Since 2012, drivers have been presented with the option to select from either district or city-specific license plates, despite the mandatory use of district plates previously. A quick poll with district administrations shows an unyielding increase in the demand for personalized home license plates.
A Mixed Bag of District Affinity
Not all districts exhibit the same enthusiasm for home license plates. For instance, in Nordsachsen, only approximately 39,000 cars flaunt the district plate TDO, while a whopping 139,000 opt for cities like Delitzsch (DZ), Eilenburg (EB), Torgau (TO), Torgau (TG), and Oschatz (OZ).
In contrast, the district of Görlitz shows a considerable preference for home plates, with nearly 117,000 cars sporting Niesky (NY), Niederschlesische Oberlausitz (NOL), Zittau (ZI), Löbau (LÖB), and Weißwasser (WSW) plates. In stark contrast, the district plates share the road with only around 92,000 vehicles bearing the GR (Görlitz) identifier.
Other districts present a reverse or balanced ratio. For example, in the district of Meißen, the district code MEI, representing about 136,000 vehicles, is found more frequently than the joint total of old plates such as Großenhain (GRH), Riesa (RIE), and Riesa-Großenhain (RG), which number approximately 65,500.
Retention Nationwide Creates a Kaleidoscopic License Plate Landscape
Since 2015, it has been permissible in Germany for vehicle owners to maintain their previous license plates upon moving to another district without needing a new one. This practice has contributed to a colorful and diverse landscape of license plates all over the nation.
The district of Mittelsachsen's roads are not merely shared with vehicles from adjoining regions like the Erzgebirge (ERZ), Leipzig (L), Chemnitz (C), or Zwickau (Z). The scene is now enriched with a variety of Berlin (B) plates (101), Munich (M) plates (57), and Hannover (H) plates (17).
