Elke Müller's banana plant, discovered six years ago on a dump in Karlsruhe's Durlach district, has grown to be larger than most other banana plants, according to her. This remarkable growth is attributed to her nurturing and care, which includes watering the plant plentifully and feeding it a handful of mineral fertilizer Blaukorn in the spring.
The banana plant in Elke Müller's garden bears elongated green fruits, which she hopes will turn yellow this year. Last year, the plant bore fruit for the first time, a testament to its health and vitality.
Despite its size, the banana plant is significantly smaller than its counterparts from southerly regions. However, Elke Müller reports that the taste of her bananas is not different from those grown in warmer climates.
As winter approaches, the banana plant will be winterized in two months. Elke Müller plans to prune the plant to about one meter and cover it with bubble wrap and fleece for protection. Small offshoots of the plant have appeared from time to time, which she and her husband have distributed in various locations.
The banana plant will be unpacked again in March. In the meantime, Elke Müller's garden continues to thrive. It is adorned with a little house for hedgehogs and tortoises, fruit trees, and various figurines, many of which are from her or her husband's grandmothers.
Elke Müller maintains her fitness through gardening, finding it important for her well-being. She believes that the key to the growth of her banana plant lies in its ample watering, a secret she is happy to share.
