Enhanced Resources for Safer Navigation by Boat

boardingseasons are here, and the disability community is getting their oars ready across the UK! The thriving network of Sailability organizations is expanding opportunities and boosting skill development among its members.

Building on past triumphs and learning from failures, Sailability organizations are continually striving for growth and improvement. Have a peek at the MAIB's LimbItless report for valuable insights on past mishaps and learnings. The RYA is currently assessing the report and considering ways to share the knowledge and contribute to the overall safety and inclusivity in boating.

The RYA's Sailability team is a cornerstone of this learning process, producing advice and guidance tailored to specific needs. Recently, they've started working on a new resource for wheelchair users who prefer to stay seated during boating.

A workshop was held at the onset, followed by internal discussions within the RYA, and preliminary conversations with Wetwheels and other organizations for collaboration. The Sailability community will play a crucial role in the process, sharing their experiences, providing feedback on early drafts, and implementing the guidance as soon as it's published. Stay tuned!

Safely setting sail doesn't stop for new resources—it's a daily affair out on the water. To aid you in making smart decisions, here are three key tips:

  1. Stay in the know—Safety guidance for disabled people and the Sailability safety blog are abundant resources for sailors with disabilities. Topics range from drop bow vessels to keelboat recovery.
  2. Understand your role—Be crystal clear about your responsibilities and communicate them to others involved. Who's in charge when it comes to safe boating?
  3. Prepare, practice, and prevent—Implementing safety management practices is your best defense against potential mishaps on the water. However, if circumstances go awry, preparation and practice can make all the difference when the chips are down.

And don't forget to share your experiences with us—both the victories and the setbacks! The sailing community learns together, and your input is essential in fostering an inclusive and supportive environment for all.

Enjoying an active lifestyle and embracing outdoor-living are essential elements for many Sailability members, as they continue to excel in sports and home-and-garden activities while navigating the waterways. The RYA's Sailability team is working on a new resource to ensure wheelchair users can participate in boating while seated comfortably, further expanding outdoor-living opportunities for the disability community.
