Erwin Seidemann's Autumn Planting Tips: Fertilize, Cover Crops, and Soil Preparation

Erwin Seidemann, renowned plant expert and host of ORF Radio Tirol's Friday show, has released autumn planting recommendations through Erwins Gartenschule. The advice covers conifers, peonies, and soil preparation.

Seidemann suggests using superphosphate, potassium sulfate, or wood ash for tilling. These fertilizers provide long-lasting benefits and strengthen root systems. After harvesting, sowing cover crops, or green manure, enhances soil structure and quality. Planting cover crops alongside fertilizers before tilling fortifies the soil and gives next year's plants a head start.

Classic cover crops like mustard and phacelia create soil tilth, enrich it with organic matter, and help control weeds. However, avoid using fast-acting nitrogen fertilizers like nitrate in the fall.

Erwin Seidemann's autumn planting recommendations include using specific fertilizers for tilling, sowing cover crops after harvesting, and planting cover crops alongside fertilizers before tilling. This approach improves soil health and sets the stage for next year's plants.
