Experience the "Living Art" Island Exhibition from Japan on our Los Angeles-based site
Discover the unique art installations and cultural revitalization of the Japanese island of Inujima at our website Los Angeles's latest exhibition, "Symbiosis: Living Island". The exhibition, running from April 15 - July 5, 2023, is located at 6801 Hollywood Blvd., Los Angeles, CA 90028.
The exhibition features an experiential diorama of Inujima, showcasing architectural models of the art pavilions, documentary videos, and testimonies from residents. Visitors can explore Inujima island by traveling its encircling road, and gain insights into the island's history as a center for copper refining and stone quarrying.
The Inujima "Art House Project", curated by Yuko Hasegawa and Kazuyo Sejima, a Pritzker Prize-winning architect, has transformed the island by converting abandoned houses and buildings into unique art installations. The project includes five art pavilions and outdoor exhibits that evolve with the landscape over time.
Yuko Hasegawa, the director of the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa, has highlighted the work of three artists - Beatriz Milhazes, Haruka Kojin, and Yusuke Komuta - within the exhibition. The exhibition also includes Inujima landscape imagery by renowned photographer Takashi Homma.
Admission to the exhibition is free, and walk-ins are invited. The gallery is open daily from 11 a.m. - 7 p.m. (Mon. - Fri.) and 11 a.m. - 8 p.m. (Sat. - Sun.). The project has recently expanded to include a botanical garden, a bar, and amenities for visitors to stay on the island.
