Living on a sailboat for an extended period offers a unique blend of benefits and challenges. One individual embarked on such a journey in March 2021, setting sail on an adventure that would last approximately 1.5 years.

The sailboat lifestyle provided the individual with a taste of freedom and off-grid living. Solar power and upgrades enabled them to stay away from marinas and civilization for long periods, offering privacy and self-sufficiency. Living aboard provided meaningful, ever-changing experiences and a close connection to nature, which could be rewarding and mentally stimulating.

However, the challenges were not to be underestimated. Space constraints necessitated creative storage solutions and accepting a minimalist lifestyle. Daily boat handling and maintenance kept the individual physically engaged, which helped maintain fitness, especially beneficial as they aged.

One of the most significant hurdles was the need for robust systems to ensure safety and comfort during extended voyages and adverse conditions. Systems like autopilot, watermakers, bilge pumps, and power generation had to be reliable and redundant. Constant upkeep and repairs were required, demanding skills and patience, and sometimes problem-solving under pressure.

In remote areas, the individual had to take "saltwater baths" in the sea instead of freshwater showers. Soap didn't lather well in the sea, and salt stuck to their skin and hair, making them self-conscious and uncomfortable. Daily tasks like showering and grocery shopping were more difficult on the sailboat.

Despite these challenges, the individual cherished every opportunity to make memories with loved ones after missing a year of birthdays and holidays. They learned to appreciate the simple things in life, like being able to shower whenever wanted and the ease of buying and storing food, after living on a sailboat.

However, the thick layer of salt and grease in their hair made them self-conscious and uncomfortable. The individual also experienced homesickness more frequently than expected while living on a sailboat. They missed sharing experiences like eating ice cream with family and trying local foods with friends.

In August 2022, the individual moved into an apartment, marking the end of their sailboat adventure. Despite the challenges, they are happy to carry memories of breathtaking beaches and diverse cultures. They are looking forward to the next chapter on land.

Living on a sailboat offered an other lifestyle that combined outdoor-living with home-and-garden elements, as the individual adapted to saltwater baths and creative storage solutions. However, the transition to land brought a renewed appreciation for the everyday conveniences often taken for granted, like freshwater showers and grocery shopping in a well-stocked store.
