In a bid to promote sustainability and extend the lifespan of its products, Arc'teryx, a leading outdoor apparel brand, has introduced several initiatives aimed at keeping its gear in use for longer.

One such initiative is the Arc'teryx ReBird service center, which offers a range of repair services for jackets. From minor repairs like patches for tears, free of charge, to more complex repairs like zipper replacements and buckle replacements, some of which may incur a small fee, the service center caters to various needs.

The Arc'teryx ReBird center, located in Manchester, is the brand's first UK store outside of London. The service center stands out for its accessibility and efficiency compared to some other repair services.

Aaron Rodriguez, a product guide at an Arc'teryx ReBird center, demonstrated the repair process using an old Arc'teryx Zeta LT jacket with a tear in the back. The machine used in the demonstration forces water into the fabric at a rate stronger than heavy rainstorms to test waterproofness.

The waterproofness of a jacket can be compromised if the pores in the Gore-Tex membrane that allow sweat to escape get clogged over time due to lack of washing. To maintain the waterproof properties of Arc'teryx jackets, it is essential to regularly wash them using specific techniques.

Proper care includes washing the jacket using a gentle cycle or permanent press with medium heat, avoiding harsh detergents or fabric softeners. Rinse at least twice to remove all soap and dirt because grime and soap reduce the effectiveness of the fabric’s water repellency. After washing, reapply a Durable Water Repellent (DWR) treatment specifically designed for waterproof outerwear.

Arc'teryx provides own-brand DWR for customers who feel confident reproofing their jackets themselves. The brand also offers a free service called Product Care Education to help customers extend the life of their gear at home.

Moreover, Arc'teryx uses sustainable production methods like dope dying and PFAS-free Gore-Tex membrane. The brand isn't the only one offering in-house repairs; other brands like Osprey, Rab, Mountain Hardwear, and Danner also offer repair services for gear.

Arc'teryx has a program to trade in old gear, which is already available in North America. This initiative is part of the brand's circularity initiative, which aims to keep its gear in play for longer, from design to post-purchase.

Outdoor enthusiasts have a higher carbon footprint than athletes from other individual sports due to their gear usage and the harsh conditions they put their gear through. A 2018 research article claims that outdoor enthusiasts' carbon footprint is 40 percent greater than that of athletes from other individual sports. By promoting repair services and care tips, Arc'teryx is contributing to reducing this impact.

Design teams at Arc'teryx consider how they can create functionality and freedom of movement while making it easier to repair their products. The teams are even considering creating jackets with panels that can be replaced in their entirety to extend the life of the garment.

By following these care steps, your Arc’teryx waterproof jacket will maintain its breathability and waterproof performance across alpine or hiking activities. So, whether you're an avid climber or a casual hiker, take care of your Arc'teryx gear to ensure it serves you well for years to come.
