Diving into the World of Folding Bikes: ADAC Test Reveals Shocking Findings
Folding and Folding Tires Tested by ADAC: Shocking Findings Revealed
Heads up, cycling enthusiasts! Folding bikes, a popular choice among commuters and campers, have taken the market by storm. But, are they really as impressive as they seem? The ADAC took eight bikes for a spin to find out and here's what they discovered.
Folding bikes offer convenience, making them ideal for travel ranging from daily commutes to camping trips. They can often be carried along in public transportation, depending on the region's regulations. However, the ADAC, known for their auto testing, decided to test these bikes on various parameters like riding, handling, safety, durability, and pollution.
Eight Bikes under the Microscope - A Frame Break Unveiled
Eight models, priced between 535 euros and 2969 euros, went under the spotlight. The findings? Surprising, according to the ADAC. "Large differences - and sometimes clear weaknesses" among the models were exposed. The criticisms ranged from weak brakes, high costs, to a frame break. Yes, a frame break! Although it doesn't necessarily lead to a fall in practical use, it's still a significant drawback. The bike that suffered this frame break, costing 2879 euros, received a "Sufficient" rating.
Some models, even the cheapest one, also exhibited deficiencies in braking, particularly in wet conditions.
Winner Takes It All - Brompton G Line Shines
The "Brompton G Line," priced at 2969 euros, emerged as the champion. It impressed the testers with its excellent riding behavior, high stability, and versatility on diverse surfaces. It's available in three frame sizes, catering to various body sizes. However, it also draws some criticism. Given the test price, the testers were not impressed by the lack of side stands and lighting.
Apart from the Brompton G Line, "Riese und Müller Birdy touring" (2898 euros), "Coast-bikes Hightide No.03 8-Gang" (749 euros), and "Dahon Mariner i7U" (1099 euros) also scored "Good."
Different Strokes for Different Folks
It's essential to remember that the test winner might not always be the best fit for individual needs. Each folding or collapsible bike is tailored to meet specific requirements. For instance, someone traveling on uneven paths needs a different model than a commuter who needs to transport the bike easily. Fortunately, there are suitable options for every purpose.
