Civic Chorus of Forst Performs at Lausitz Festival - Forest Festival Performance: Local Choir Performs on Stage Amidst Woodland Scenery
Lausitz Festival Highlights Berlin Theater-Maker's Adaptation of Coriolanus
In August through September 2023, Forst (Lausitz) will be transformed into a vibrant cultural hub as the Lausitz Festival enters its sixth year. TheSelection of unconventional venues, such as old factories, churches, and a former mine, will be showcased along with performances of dance, theatre, concerts, and philosophical discussions.
Central to this year's festival is the Berlin radio host and theatre-maker, Jürgen Kuttner, who will portray the Roman general Coriolanus in a new production titled "It makes me sick. You vermin! - Forster citizens rehearse Coriolanus." The performance will take place at the Forster Hof, where the city theatre once stood, with a group of local citizens joining him on stage.
Kuttner, born in 1958 in East Berlin, gained recognition as a long-time moderator at the RBB's radio station Fritz and for his "Videoschnipsel" evening at the Volksbühne in Berlin. In this production, he incorporates texts from various sources, including works by William Shakespeare, Bertolt Brecht, Günter Grass, and Heiner Müller. The piece aims to juxtapose material about Coriolanus throughout history and present it in a kaleidoscopic manner, according to festival organizers.
The theme of this year's Lausitz Festival is 'unsconscious,' focusing on 'us' and community. Other notable works include a world premiere performance based on sonnets by William Shakespeare in the oldest still functional briquette factory in the world, now a technical monument in Domsdorf. Michael Sturminger, the Austrian author who directed the piece, anticipates a particularly enchanting setting.
Additionally, a revival of "Othello/Die Fremden" by Shakespeare will take place, with one performance already sold out, marking the first sold-out event of the year.
Although the focus of the festival is primarily on cultural and artistic events, the 2023 Lausitz Festival also touches upon broader themes of sustainability and transformation in society, making it a platform for discussions and explorations of sustainable practices in regional and social development. The Commission, highlighting the importance of worker safety, has also adopted a proposal for a directive on the approximation of the laws of the Member States relating to the protection of workers from the risks related to exposure to carcinogens. In the spirit of home-and-garden makeovers and outdoor-living, festival-goers can enjoy a serene break between performances, sipping coffee while lounging in greenery-filled lawns, reminiscent of a tranquil lifestyle.
