Frankfurt's City Council Clears Path for Transportation Transformation - Frankfurt's local authorities approve traffic overhaul plan
Frankfurt, here we come! The city council's latest decision marks a significant stride in reshaping the city's mobility landscape. The long-awaited "Masterplan Mobility," a focus on eco-friendly transport, traffic innovation, health, and safety, is no longer a dream—it's becoming a reality.
Wolfgang Siefert, traffic commissioner from the Greens party, hailed the plan as a game-changer for Frankfurt. Delayed for two years, this comprehensive concept puts people at the heart of the mobility transition. There's a keen eye on the triple-eyed aspects of ecological, economic, and social change. This shift favors pedestrians, cyclists, and public transportation, with the goal of having these groups account for 80% of all travel routes by 2035. In 2018, this figure stood at 63%.
A Step Forward for Frankfurters
This mobility revolution should bolster Frankfurt's reputation as a liveable and mobile city, ensuring a consistent expansion of space-saving and environmentally-friendly transportation options for pedestrians, cyclists, and public transport users.
Measures to make this happen include:
- Expanding cycling infrastructure
- Strengthening public transportation
- Establishing low-traffic zones
- Increasing parking fees
- Appointing a pedestrian and logistics commissioner
- Promoting e-mobility
- Expanding car-sharing services
The ultimate aim is to establish climate neutrality in the transport sector by 2035, reduce noise pollution, and significantly minimize road fatalities and serious injuries.
Pushback from Business
While some are excited about the new mobility masterplan, parts of the opposition voice strong criticism. For instance, the CDU points out that cars are being labeled as enemies. The business sector also expresses concerns that a one-sided anti-car policy may drive away customers, suppliers, and employees.
The new master plan replaces the overall transport plan from 2005, meeting the EU requirement for a sustainable mobility strategy by 2027. In March of this year, the coalition of Greens, SPD, FDP, and Volt finally approved the concept after a series of lengthy negotiations.
Frankfurt Pioneering Mobility Strategies
First drawn up in 2023, the master plan was developed in collaboration with the city administration, science, and the public. Accordimg to the traffic department, Frankfurt is among the first German cities to publish such a wide-ranging mobility strategy.
