Granddaughter of the iconic 'Queen of Beale Street' continues her royal legacy, a reigning queen in her own right.
Kendal Moseley's unique journey as Miss Black North Mississippi Talented Teen is deeply intertwined with the legacy and influence of her grandmother, Ruby Wilson, famously known as the "Queen of Beale Street."
Ruby Wilson, a celebrated blues, soul, and gospel singer, was admired for her great voice at many blues clubs on Beale Street. Her status as the "Queen of Beale Street" provided Kendal with a strong familial role model of talent, dedication, and cultural pride. Wilson was an ambassador for Memphis and Memphis music, and her influence continues to live on through her granddaughter.
Kendal credits much of her success in pageantry to the inspiration and guidance she received from Ruby Wilson. Wilson's music career and community recognition as Beale Street royalty served both as inspiration and a foundation for Kendal’s own achievements in the Miss Black North Mississippi Talented Teen pageant.
Moseley's pageant journey includes moments dating back before she took the stage. She found out about her first pageant through an online ad and was encouraged by her mother to participate. Kendal's grandmother, Ruby Wilson, attended many of her events and played a significant role in her development of confidence and self-assurance.
As Kendal continues to make waves in the pageant world, she is one of the three young women who will represent North Mississippi in the upcoming Miss Black Mississippi USA Pageant in DC this weekend. The series of reports focusing on Memphis moments, called "We The People," is being aired by Action News 5 to celebrate America's 250th year of independence.
Through her pageant success, Kendal feels she can connect with her grandmother on a deeper level, as both women embody creativity, dedication, and a strong sense of cultural pride. Kendal considers herself a queen because of Wilson's influence, never showing up late for an event; she shows up and shows out, just like her grandmother did.
Wilson passed away at the age of 68 in 2016, but her legacy continues to inspire Kendal Moseley and many others in the Memphis community.
