Guided Outing for Nature Preservation Volunteers

On a rainy day in June 2025, volunteers gathered in Rottenburg an der Laaber for a traditional excursion in nature conservation. The event, part of the "City-Country-River" project, aimed to promote biodiversity through targeted measures, as introduced by Mayor Holzner.

The day began at the municipal sports facility, where the group observed species-rich flower meadows, including the development of the endangered cornflower. Advisors for various wildlife, such as hornets, beavers, mussels, and building insects, nature conservation wardens, and some in multiple roles, joined the participants.

The excursion led the group through the diverse meadow landscape surrounding Rottenburg. Despite the heavy rain, the group persevered and reached the observation platform at Högldorf, where they were rewarded with a sighting of a water buffalo herd.

At Niedereulenbach, the visit concluded with an educational stop. Here, participants learned about a stork nest and a natural hedge, gaining fascinating details about local flora and fauna. The day ended on a high note, with a shared snack in Rottenburg, where participants reflected on the informative and educational afternoon.

Mayor Alfred Holzner, Veronika Oberpriller from the environmental department of the city of Rottenburg, and Helmut Naneder from the landscape conservation association welcomed the group. However, there is no specific information about which organization actively participated in the Knowledge Exchange event at the Laber Wiesen on June 17, 2025.

During the visit, information about the care of wet and damp meadows was provided. Unfortunately, no specific details about the water buffalo herd were available. With better weather, storks, herons, and potentially the breeding pair of lapwings could be observed in the wet meadows using binoculars.

All participants were enthusiastic about the practical program and the opportunity for exchange among themselves and with the lower nature conservation authority. The excursion, though challenging due to the weather, was a success, demonstrating the volunteers' commitment to the cause of nature conservation.
