Historic Trinity Episcopal Church Launches $1M Restoration Project

Trinity Episcopal Church in Staunton, Virginia, is set to embark on a significant $1 million project this month. The historic preservation and accessibility standards improvement initiative aims to restore and enhance the church grounds, which date back to 1746.

Founded as Augusta Parish, the church is one of the oldest Episcopal parishes west of the Blue Ridge Mountains and holds a rich history. Notably, the Virginia General Assembly met there in June 1781, and it is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The project, assisted by William T. Frazier and Kathleen O. Frazier of Frazier Associates, will commence with the removal of seven trees from the historic churchyard and cemetery. It will then proceed with exterior restoration, accessibility improvements, new signage, and an accessible bathroom. The project is expected to be completed by July 2026, coinciding with the United States' 250th birthday.

Funding for the project is split equally between the Virginia 250 Preservation Fund and the parish's Generation to Generation giving campaign. The Virginia Department of Historic Resources also contributed to the financing.

Trinity Episcopal Church is one of 35 projects statewide to receive Virginia 250 funds, totaling $20 million. The project aims to preserve and restore all aspects of the church grounds, ensuring good stewardship for future generations.
