A Glimpse into the Revamped Merzen Mill in Langen Mill Valley

Historical Restoration of Merzen's Grain Mill

The city of Langen has swung into action, refurbishing the traditional wooden waterwheel at the Merzen Mill nestled within the picturesque Langen Mill Valley. The move was necessitated due to the long-lasting damage incurred by the previous millwheel during the scorching summers of 2018 and 2019.

A Touch of the Past, Steeped in History

Dating back to its first recorded mention in 1405 as the "Springen Mill," the Merzen Mill, now a restaurant with an adjoining inn, is one of the oldest structures in the Langen area. Popularly known as the "Kraemer Mill" among older residents, this mill took on its current name in the 18th century after Johannes Merz, one of its operators.

Gone are the days when grain was milled and wood was sawn in Langen Mill Valley; that halted in the mid-20th century. The last recorded milling took place on June 30, 1959, in the nearby Wettengel Mill, effectively ending the nearly 600-year-old milling tradition on the Sterzbach.

Crafted for Authenticity in the Spirit of the Past

In commemoration of the mill's 600th anniversary in 2005, Langen City Works set about creating and installing a historically accurate oak millwheel. Boasting a 2.90-meter diameter, this wheel echoes the technological importance of mills in the medieval food supply system. This latest restoration follows suit, relying on the same historical model.

In the words of Stadtwerke CEO, Uwe Linder, "The Merzen Mill holds a significant place in our hearts, and we're thrilled to enable visitors touring the mill valley on lovely days to marvel at our refreshed millwheel."

Mill Path Connecting History's Dots

The Verkehrs- und Verschönerungsverein Langen (VVV) applauds the initiative. Last year, the VVV launched the "Langen Mill Path" that commences at the Merzen Mill, winds through historical sites, and culminates at the "Am Mühlstein" complex opposite the Wettengel Mill.
