According to a recent survey by the Society for the German Language (GfdS), Matheo and Ella are the most popular first names for newborns in Saarland. These names were also number one on the list in 2023.
Elias and Noah claim the second and third spots for boys, while Emilia and Mia round out the top three for girls.
Nationwide Favorites: Sophia and Noah Remain on Top
Sophia and Noah remain the most sought-after baby names nationwide in Germany, according to the GfdS. In 2023, these names were given the most frequently as well. GfdS business manager Andrea Ewels from Wiesbaden attributes the enduring popularity to their appealing sound.
The GfdS has been releasing an annual catalog of the most common German first names since 1977, gathering data from approximately 750 local registration offices. Their 2024 data includes almost 900,000 entries, representing nearly 92 percent of all first names given in Germany that year.
