Japan's National Holidays: Celebration of Mountain Day

Celebrating Japan's Mountains: Mountain Day (Yama no Hi)

In the heart of Japan, towering 3,000-meter mountains have long held a special place in the country's culture and spirituality. This reverence for the mountains led to the creation of Mountain Day (Yama no Hi), a unique national holiday that encourages appreciation for these natural wonders.

The idea for Mountain Day was first proposed by mountaineering organizations in 2010, and after a grassroots campaign that began in the early 1960s, it finally became an official holiday in 2014. The Act on National Holidays was amended to recognize Mountain Day, and the Mountain Day Establishment Council was established to promote the holiday.

Mountain Day is celebrated annually on August 11, a date chosen for its significance. The kanji for eight (八) resembles a mountain shape, and the number 11 looks like a pair of tall trees. Moreover, August 11 falls in the middle of the summer school holidays and just before Obon, an important traditional Buddhist festival. This timing allows people an extended holiday period during summer, making it easier for families to embark on mountain excursions.

The significance of Mountain Day lies in fostering a personal and communal connection to Japan's mountains, which cover about 70% of the country. Historically, mountains have been considered sacred and a link between heaven and earth in Japanese spirituality and religion (Shinto and Buddhism). Mountain Day provides an opportunity to appreciate the natural, cultural, spiritual, and recreational benefits of mountains.

Mount Fuji, an international icon, is one of Japan's most famous mountains. Standing at an elevation of 3,776 meters, it is highly popular with both Japanese climbers and visitors from overseas. In 2013, Mount Fuji was registered as a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Throughout August, events celebrating mountains are held across Japan. These events range from mountain climbing competitions to cultural festivals, providing opportunities for people to learn about and appreciate Japan's mountains.

It's important to note that some stores and facilities close for both Mountain Day and Obon, so it's advisable to check ahead before making travel plans. The Obon break, from August 13-16, is another important traditional festival in Japan.

Mountain Day is unique among Japanese holidays as it grew out of a grassroots movement, not a government initiative. This makes it a rare case in Japan, reflecting a growing emphasis on ecological awareness and cultural tradition.

Japan has more than 20 mountains with an elevation of over 3,000 meters, making it a paradise for mountain enthusiasts. Whether you're a seasoned climber or simply enjoy the beauty of the mountains from a distance, Mountain Day offers a chance to connect with Japan's rich mountain heritage.
