"Kiwanis Club and Solinger Table gift more than 60 Torchbearer roles to schoolchildren"
The Kiwanis Club Solingen and the Solingen Food Bank have once again joined forces to support underprivileged children in Solingen, Germany. This annual event sees the two organisations collaborating to provide essential school supplies to children from low-income families.
This year, the partnership focused on supporting school starters, with the Kiwanis Club Solingen donating new backpacks to 60 to 65 first-graders from financially weak families. The total cost of the backpacks donated by the Kiwanis Club was 4,500 euros.
Brigitte Funk, chairperson of the Solingen Food Bank, emphasised the importance of this initiative. "Many families cannot afford such expenses," she said, "and the cost of a proper backpack ranges between 200 and 300 euros."
Stefan Schreiner, the secretary of the Kiwanis Club Solingen, highlighted the club's long-standing commitment to this cause. "We have been donating backpacks to school starters via the food bank for years," he said.
The Solingen Food Bank, which assists approximately 3,000 people, played a crucial role in distributing the donated backpacks. They also had a different sponsor for the backpacks for fifth-graders.
The donation of backpacks was formally announced at a press conference that took place on Saturday. The event was a testament to the ongoing efforts of both organisations to alleviate financial burdens on underprivileged families and promote equal educational opportunities for all children in the community.
Brigitte Funk also took the opportunity to seek new volunteers to help with the workload at the Solingen Food Bank. "With the growing number of families in need, we are always in need of committed volunteers," she said.
The Food Bank Solingen, with the support of organisations like the Kiwanis Club Solingen, continues to play a vital role in supporting families in need. The partnership between the two organisations is a shining example of community spirit and a testament to the power of collaboration in addressing social issues.
The Kiwanis Club Solingen's annual initiative expanded this year, not only providing school supplies but also donating home-and-garden essentials to families in need, aiming to uplift their lifestyle beyond education. Brigitte Funk, chairperson of the Solingen Food Bank, expressed gratitude for this addition, stating, "In addition to school supplies, these home-and-garden items will essentially complete our mission of improving the overall well-being of underprivileged families, contributing significantly to their lifestyle."
