Exhibition Spotlights the Art of Japanese Silk Braiding: Kumihimo

From December 11, 2021, to March 6, 2022, the Los Angeles hub of our website will host the exhibition "KUMIHIMO: The Art of Japanese Silk Braiding by DOMYO." This captivating event showcases the rich history and contemporary relevance of this traditional craft, offering a place of new discovery that transcends physical and conceptual boundaries.

A Thousand Years of Tradition

Kumihimo, meaning "gathered threads," is a Japanese artistic tradition of braiding silk cords that has existed for over 1,500 years. With origins dating back to the Imperial Court and Buddhist temples, the art form reached its golden age by the ninth century.

From Samurai to Fashion

Historically, Kumihimo cords were essential in samurai culture during the Heian (794–1185) and Kamakura (1185–1333) periods, used for lacing armor and securing weapons. The complex braiding techniques developed over centuries to create resilient and elegant cords symbolizing status and protection. With time, these cords also became important in Shinto and Buddhist ceremonies, symbolizing connection and protection in spiritual contexts.

The evolution of Kumihimo expanded into art and fashion, where these braided silk cords are employed decoratively in kimono dress, obijime (ties for obi sashes), jewelry, and accessories. Contemporary creators use Kumihimo braiding to design intricate necklaces, bracelets, and tassels, sometimes blending traditional craftsmanship with modern textile design and wearable art.

The cultural significance of Kumihimo endures in Japan and globally, combining heritage with contemporary aesthetics. Workshops in places like Kagurazaka, Tokyo, offer hands-on experiences that link historical tradition with modern artistry.

Exhibition Highlights

The exhibition introduces the tradition of braiding and how it is distinct from weaving and knitting. It showcases the structure of kumihimo braiding, with large-scale models of the wooden braiding stands over which the strands of thread are laid during braiding. Replicas of silk braids dating as far back as the seventh century are also on display, providing a historical overview of braiding in Japan.

Additional related hands-on workshops and webinars will be announced soon, offering visitors the opportunity to learn more about this captivating art form. On December 15, a webinar on "The History and Significance of Kumihimo in Japanese Culture" will be held.

This event is part of an innovative project with three hubs, including London and São Paulo, demonstrating the global reach and enduring legacy of Kumihimo.
