In Turkey, a remarkable transformation is taking place in the realm of libraries. No longer are they simply repositories of books; they are now "living libraries" that nurture learning, creativity, and community spirit.

According to the Culture and Tourism Ministry, this shift towards a more dynamic library experience is being enthusiastically supported. The change is evident in the growing popularity of libraries across the country, with 38,737,705 people visiting public libraries in 2024, marking a 15% increase from the previous year.

One of the largest libraries in Europe, the Rami Library in Istanbul, exemplifies this transformation. It offers free tea, seasonal soups, and cozy reading corners for visitors, making it a welcoming haven for readers.

The Millet Library in Ankara, which can accommodate up to 5,500 readers, is another shining example. It provides 24/7 access and complimentary hot beverages, further enhancing its appeal.

This surge in library visits is driven by a variety of factors. The growing demand for extensive access to books, periodicals, online resources, and the opportunities for shared experiences and forging connections are key motivators.

Moreover, libraries in Turkey are diversifying their resources. Digital loans via apps like Libby and Hoopla account for 26.71% of total borrows, and new offerings such as board game collections and "little staff libraries" to promote reading are becoming commonplace.

The Syracuse Public Library in Turkey Creek Township, serving a town with roughly 8,500 residents, reported a 24.25% increase in material checkouts from 2022 to 2024, with a total of 89,810 items borrowed in 2024. This rise reflects growing community engagement, highlighted by 5,245 program attendees, 3,058 public computer uses for job applications and other essential activities, and 160 home deliveries to homebound patrons.

The expanding services and community-focused programs in libraries like Syracuse are not isolated incidents. In smaller cities like Kütahya and Sivas, libraries host "reading breakfasts" or "soup days" to encourage community engagement.

Young people in Istanbul are also benefiting from this change. They are using local libraries not only to borrow books but also to prepare for exams, take practice tests, and benefit from free internet and computer access.

Modern Turkish libraries offer more than just books. They provide free internet, study spaces, skill workshops, and cultural activities. The Library Summer/Semester Program (KÜYAP) offers various activities, including robotics and origami workshops, Karagöz-Hacıvat shadow plays, multilingual storytelling, and personal development seminars.

As libraries evolve into multifaceted community hubs offering access to technology, digital resources, educational events, and cultural engagement, it's no surprise that they are attracting a broader audience beyond traditional library users.

However, the rise in book prices and limited access to periodicals have led some readers in Turkey to turn to libraries. This trend, coupled with the expanding services and community-focused programs, is likely to continue driving the growing popularity of libraries in Turkey.

In this transformation, Turkish libraries are extending their services beyond books, now offering home-and-garden amenities such as free tea and seasonal soups, creating inviting spaces for visitors.

This development of libraries as hubs for cultural activities, technology, and community spirit aligns with the emerging trend of "lifestyle libraries" that cater to diverse interests and demographics.
