New Cycleways Transform London's Landscape
London is witnessing a significant transformation as new cycleways are being created across various boroughs, aiming to enhance pedestrian and cycling connectivity.
In a notable development, a new Cycleway has been established from Stratford to Woodgrange Park, while another has been created from Burnt Oak to Colindale, marking the first Cycleway in Barnet. A 3km link has been added for Cycleway 2 (Aldgate to Stratford), running through the east of Newham, and a new route connects to Cycleway 24 (Tottenham Hale to Woodford New Road) and beyond to the comprehensive network of Cycleways in Waltham Forest.
Two new links to Cycleway 40 have been added in Ealing, running through Hounslow, adding 10km to the network and connecting to Cycleway 9 (Brentford to Hammersmith). A new 3km Cycleway link has been created from Uxbridge Road to Greenford, connecting to Cycleway 40 (Greenford to Ealing).
Another new route connects to the Waltham Forest Cycleways to the north of the borough from Chingford to Walthamstow. The first Cycleway in Barnet has been created, connecting two town centres, and the new Cycleways include a route from Folkestone Gardens to New Cross and another from Greenwich to Lewisham.
The total length of London's cycle network now stands at 390km, with the organisation launching ten new Cycleways across the city, adding 35km to London's strategic cycle network.
London's Walking and Cycling Commissioner, Will Norman, emphasised the importance of expanding London's cycleway network, stating that it is crucial for encouraging more Londoners to choose cycling for shorter trips.
Provisional safety data indicates a 5.7% decrease in people injured while cycling in the city from 2022 to 2023, with a 6.3% increase in daily cycle journeys during the same period. These new cycleways are expected to support Londoners of all backgrounds and abilities to cycle safely as the Mayor works towards a fairer, safer, and greener London for everyone.
While no specific cycling network expansions were mentioned for Heathrow or Cambridgeshire, there are ongoing transport-related developments like autonomous buses and rail improvements. The Waltham Forest proposal represents a concrete example of a recent, direct intervention in cycle network expansion to encourage greener, healthier travel options.
