Lower Saxony's Energy Minister Tours Green Projects, Emphasizing Public Engagement

Christian Meyer, Lower Saxony's Minister of Energy, kicked off a two-day summer tour to showcase renewable energy projects and energy efficiency initiatives across the region. The tour, which began in Emsland and Osnabrück, included visits to innovative projects and a citizen dialogue on the energy transition.

On the first day, Minister Meyer visited the Stephanus-House senior home in Lingen. The facility is transitioning to climate-friendly energy, planning to install a PV system on its roof. Later, he observed green hydrogen production via electrolysis using wind turbines at an unnamed organization, though details on funding from the Ministry of the Environment were not provided.

In Haren (Ems), Meyer visited the CEC, where green hydrogen powers a hydrogen tractor. The CEC's facilities received 4.8 million euros in funding from the Ministry of the Environment, with total costs of 9.7 million euros. This project is part of the 'H2Agrar' initiative, investigating hydrogen use in agriculture, which benefits several organizations including CEC Haren and the University of Emden/Leer.

Meyer also visited the Haselünne public swimming pool, which is undergoing energetic renovation with state support of 1.2 million euros. The project aims to reduce annual CO2 emissions by 65.92 tons and make the pool nearly climate-neutral. The tour concluded with a visit to RE.LION.BAT. Circular GmbH in Meppen, which recycles lithium-ion batteries with a recycling rate of up to 96% using regional solar and wind energy.

Minister Meyer's tour highlighted various projects demonstrating Lower Saxony's commitment to renewable energy and energy efficiency. From green hydrogen production to battery recycling, these initiatives showcase the region's potential in the energy transition. The tour also included citizen dialogues, emphasizing the importance of public engagement in shaping the region's energy future.
