Marital Dynamics Over Seven Years: Exploring the Mix of Discontentment and Harmony in a Long-Term Relationship in Split City
Rewritten Article:
24th of June marks my seventh year in Croatia - a milestone that rivals the 'avocado capital of the world', Fallbrook, California, where I was born and raised. San Francisco took a brief lead, but Split, Croatia, has become my permanent home. I never envisioned living in this picturesque port city, let alone launching a successful career here. California shaped me, but Croatia has molded me.
Stumbling into Split wasn't part of the plan. Six months in London, seeking to finalize my Croatian citizenship, led me here unexpectedly. My parents moved to Split to retire, and a month later, I visited them to tender citizenship paperwork and revisit the sun-kissed Croatian summers of my childhood.
Upon my arrival on June 24, 2015, I saw Split in a new light. It shimmered with a vibrant energy, buzzing with expats and a thriving community of locals who I still call friends. I never anticipated falling in love with this city, but Split had captivated my heart.
Without a clear job prospect in sight, I made the most of my new surroundings. My marketing and communications background led me to a position alongside a music agent, working with big acts and up-and-coming artists. It offered a peek into the Croatian music scene, but it was just the beginning.

Months later, I stumbled upon a job posting for a writer at Total Split, the local vent of Total Croatia News. Despite my long hiatus from blogging and inexperience with Split, I applied anyway. In the blink of an eye, I returned to California for a three-week trip, receiving a call from the TCN team as soon as I landed. I met Paul Bradbury the day after I returned and began working with TCN the day after that. Seven years later, I celebrated my longest stint with a single employer and the place that taught me invaluable lessons about work and self-discovery.
My role with TCN has evolved over time, spanning Total Split, Total Inland Dalmatia, travel news, and lifestyle events. But it truly blossomed when I took over as Sports Editor in 2017. I pursued my passion for Croatian football, covering nearly all national team matches, Hajduk games, and ventured across Europe for Europa League, UEFA Nations League, and EURO 2020. I recorded 20+ international radio interviews during the 2018 World Cup, even becoming the Croatian correspondent for the world's largest sports radio station. Today, I am not only the Sports Editor of Total Croatia News but also the COO.
First name:
Aside from work, I capitalized on my native English flair for tourism projects, establishing a copywriting business in 2017. In just a few years, it has grown to more clients than I can manage alone. I am busier than ever, but I couldn't be happier. I live in an apartment I adore, have flexible hours, and can afford it all without a penny from my earnings in America. I am proud of my achievements and grateful for the lessons learned along the way.
So, what have I learned after seven years in Croatia?
Last name:
Expect Croatia to change you, more than you change it. It's aged me, but not in a bad way. It pushed me to work harder than ever and has given me opportunities I could have never dreamed of. I've learned to stop comparing Croatia to America, as both have their unique qualities, the good and the bad. I've made genuine friends here, ones I never thought I would meet on the shores of the Adriatic Sea.
Setting boundaries is essential - don't let others take advantage of your eagerness. Be transparent and communicate often. Be adaptable and persistent, for Croatia can be as unpredictable as it is beautiful. And don't forget to celebrate your successes - no matter how small they may seem.
Gender:
In the last year, Croatia has tested my resolve, but I wouldn't trade the passion and pride of the Split people (or the hardships) for anything in the world. Here's to seven more years of love, growth, and discovery in the city that changed me for the better.
