So, what's the deal with brush pens and Crayola markers?
Brush Pen = Flexible: Press harder or lighter for thicker and thinner lines, adjusting pressure on the pen.
Crayola Marker = Chiseled: Create thin and thick lines by moving your hand in different directions. Mark the side of the marker for a thicker line compared to using the tip for thinner lines.
Got it. Remember these key calligraphy concepts…
Upstrokes = Thin lines, happening when your pen moves upwards on the page.Downstrokes = Thick lines, occurring when your pen moves downwards on the paper.
Now, let's put those skills to practice!
Step One: Play around with the marker, angle it slightly more vertically for light lines. For a thick line, hold the marker less angled to use the side of it. Remember, slow and steady wins the race.
Step Two: Connecting strokes. Go up (light stroke), change direction, and go down (thick stroke). Play around with these strokes to get those smooth lines!
Step Three: Practice words. Once you get the hang of it, try writing "hi" using the light up-strokes and the heavy down-strokes. Pro tip: The slower you go, the easier the transitions from thin to thick will be.
This technique can transform any kind of writing style!
Modern calligraphy works for block letters, too! Even cursive writing. The more consistent you can be with your basic strokes, the more consistent your words will be!
