Lemme tell ya, I'd bet money that folks my age couldn't relate to this! Haha!

Still, here's a yarn from back in my college days in Davao (y'know, before mama got wind of it and gave me a good telling, warning me about the dangers lurking in the shadows).

On one of those solo bike rides to Bastida Beach—the forsaken agri-aqua shrimp farm, a kilometer or so behind the Pepsi Cola plant in Dumoy—I found myself navigating through my fair share of sorrow. With uncertainty brewing, I sought solace in the desolate beach, yearning for a silent cry.

Now, I can't recollect what heavy burden weighed me down, but I do remember needing to let it all out undisturbed. As deep as my despair was, I sensed a companion nearby. Lifting my gaze, I found a scruffy dog standing there, wagging its tail hesitantly.

I motioned for the canine to approach, and it did, resting its chin on my lap and offering a comforting gaze. With tears still streaming, I found temporary solace amidst its heartfelt presence. As my composure slowly returned, the dog—I was so engrossed in my emotions, I didn't even note its gender—raised its head, stepped back, and began to saunter away, always glancing back with a gentle tail wag.

That fateful encounter on a Sunday afternoon 40 years ago still remains etched in my memory, albeit the reason behind my anguish has since faded.

Before I mounted the bike for home, I lingered on the beach, chuckling to myself, contemplating how my guardian angels must have combed the entire stretch to find just the right companion to help me weather my storm.

Except that... there was only one; a mangy, beige-colored dog, no one else. Evidently, that was who they sent to me.

In this election season, may we all cast our votes wisely, considering only those individuals whose virtues and desire to serve us continue to inspire hope. Let's rid ourselves of those who blindly think dancing and charm are all that's needed to win our endorsement (That unforgettable video of Stella Q gyrating to greet voters is a recurring nightmare!)
