Munich's first bat park nearing completion: Anticipated opening date for Johanneskirchen facility revealed
Munich's First Bat Park in Johanneskirchen Nearly Complete
Munich, Germany - One of Munich's long-planned bat parks is nearing completion, with the facility in Johanneskirchen almost ready for opening, though the exact date remains undisclosed. The Bavarian Society for the Protection of Birds recently showcased the park to the press.
Located in Munich's northeastern region, the Johanneskirchen bat park is set to join another facility, a decision made in 2024. The city of Munich serves as a home to various bat species, such as the Greater Horseshoe Bat, Lesser Horseshoe Bat, Greater Mouse-eared Bat, and Noctule. Currently, 50 boxes for the animals hang in Bogenhausen, with no further plans to add more, given the high number of artificial habitats for bats in the relevant green area as reported by Lorena Heilmaier from the LBV.
To cater to different species, the park will offer various types of housing, from flat to gable boxes, and trees with natural cavities for shelter. LBV experts will mark potentially inhabited trunks with a "Protected Bat Tree" plaque to prevent the animals from losing their homes due to tree felling.
The park design is not yet complete as the inclusion of food sources for the bats is still underway. Artificially created deadwood piles will attract insects, considered a favorite food of bats. Additionally, a wet depression is being constructed to sit among plants that will also draw insects towards the park. The site was once home to Bogenhauser brickworks, making the clayey soil ideal for a wet biotope.
The Johanneskirchner Bat Park is expected to have a small opening at some point during the year. Meanwhile, the second park in the Au-Haidhausen district will officially open on August 31 at 7:30 PM, with a ceremony, guided tour, and sound installation. More information can be obtained by contacting the LBV at telephone number 20 02 706.
