"No arrangements are made": Munich siblings follow Boaz - pursuing their vision
Pub "Schaumamoi" in Munich: Brothers Plan to Brew Their Own Beer
In Munich's Obergiesing neighborhood, the "Schaumamoi" pub has been a cozy retreat for locals for over 30 years. Originally built for the tram operation, it transformed into a warm and welcoming tavern more than three decades ago.
Lukas Benkert, one of the current hosts, fondly recalls his mother's response when asked about the opening date: "When asked when they would open, our mother always replied with 'schau ma moi.'" This phrase, meaning "just take a look," became the namesake of the pub and reflects the relaxed and unpretentious atmosphere it offers.
The "Schaumamoi" serves a variety of beers, including the house beer Andechser, and boasts the smallest beer garden in Munich. According to Lukas, "The Schaumamoi is like a second home, a real feel-good place." This sentiment is echoed by the pub's regulars, who have helped the establishment survive the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Oskar Benkert, another host and a trained brewer, has long harbored dreams of brewing his own beer. He plans to develop and serve a "Schaumamoi Beer" at the pub, though a production timeline has not yet been finalized. The brothers anticipate keeping the pub's legacy while incorporating their personal touch to the new brew.
The building where the "Schaumamoi" is located is protected, ensuring the pub's future is not at risk due to urban development. Despite this, the brothers have ambitious plans, with Oskar aiming to brew his own beer at the pub.
The "Schaumamoi" is located at Tegernseer Landstraße 82, 81539 Munich. Its opening hours are Monday through Wednesday from 4:00 PM to 1:00 AM, Thursday and Friday from 4:00 PM to open-end, Saturday from 7:00 PM to open-end, and Sunday it is closed. Its menu features changing daily dishes, and more information can be found on its website, www.cafeschaumamoi.de, or on Instagram, schau_ma_moi.
As for the future, the brothers are optimistic, having weathered the pandemic with the support of their regulars. With the potential addition of a house-brewed beer, the "Schaumamoi" may continue to be a cherished fixture in Munich's pub scene.
Incorporating a new venture, the brothers envision offering a 'Schaumamoi Beer' as part of their food-and-drink selection, adding a personal touch to the pub's lifestyle. Additionally, home-and-garden enthusiasts may appreciate the charms of the historically protected building housing the "Schaumamoi" pub.
