Ocean Protection Movement Advances in Nice: Pivotal Moment for Marine Preservation and Progressive Technology
Freakin' Fabulous Ocean Conference 2025 in Nice Kicks Off!
For five electrifying days from June 9 to 13, 2025, the illustrious city of Nice plays host to the Third International Sea-Shindig (TIS3) spearheaded by France and Costa Rica. This much-anticipated event brings together over 60 heads of state and a throng of other participants, including scientists, NGOs, industry leaders, and international organizations, to ramp up global efforts in halting the degradation of our seas. So, get ready, because the stakes have never been freakin' higher for marine ecosystems!
The Focus of TIS3
The conference is centered on four primary topics designed to make a gigantic splash:
- Defending the Deep-Sea Diversity. Building upon the 2023 Global Seaflow Treaty, TIS3 aims to secure wider endorsements and engage in bold initiatives to protect the ecosystems of the world's high seas.
- Scrubbing the Seven Seas. By addressing concerns like microplastics, chemical leaks, and emissions, the conference hopes to unveil clever strategies to cut waste at the source and advance forward-thinking waste management systems.
- Revolutionizing Seafaring Transport. With maritime shipping responsible for roughly 3% of the world's CO2 emissions, TIS3 will introduce groundbreaking technologies and alternative fuels to help steer shipping towards greener pastures.
- Igniting Ocean Science. A concerted effort will be made to boost marine data, AI-powered monitoring systems, and collaborative science efforts to enhance our ability to govern the seas.
The conference will climax with the Nice Wave Action Plan, an ambitious endeavor to turn global commitments into tangible, measurable progress.
The Unbridled Ocean Exploration of DirectIndustry
As a champion of sustainable development, DirectIndustry has kept an eagle eye on three incredible ocean ventures that contribute to the core themes of TIS3:
1/ The Fearless Perseverance: The Seaworthy Sailboat Transforming Ocean Research
Back in 2023, we tagged along with the Perseverance team in Marseille, where we marveled at the world's most extensive oceanographic sailboat. This 42-meter aluminum beauty belongs to French explorer Jean-Louis Étienne and will pave the way for the Polar POD expedition in the Antarctic Ocean. Not only does it supply the Polar POD-a vertical drifting research station studying the Antarctic Circumpolar Current-but it will also carry out its own scientific research in the Southern Ocean.
Fitted with sophisticated sensors, the ship will collect a long-term data set on interactions between the ocean and atmosphere, oceanic biogeochemistry, and phytoplankton populations. This wealth of information aims to unlock the secrets of the Antarctic Ocean's part in global climate regulation.
Perseverance relies heavily on wind power while incorporating an environmentally friendly 600 hp engine with catalytic converters and urea exhaust treatment to tame greenhouse gas emissions.
2/ Tara Ocean Voyages: Probing the Hidden Life of the Sea
Early in 2024, we boarded the Tara, a legendary research schooner operated by the Tara Ocean Foundation. This seafaring lab is all about the microbiome of the ocean, with a focus on plankton, which have a colossal impact on carbon sequestration and oxygen production.
Over the past decade, the ship has amassed over 13,000 samples from various global locations, leading to the identification of numerous new microalgae species and viruses. Their researchers utilize genomic sequencing and imaging tools to study pollution patterns along European coastlines and unveil the secrets of marine ecosystems' reactions to human influence.
3/ An Interview with Alfa Laval: Greening the Shipping Industry
In February 2024, we sat down with Oscar Kallerdahl, Head of Marine Separation at Alfa Laval, to delve into how the Swedish powerhouse is driving the shipping sector towards sustainability. Alfa Laval's product range includes advanced fuel purification systems, exhaust gas scrubbers, and heat recovery solutions, all tailor-made to meet the IMO's decarbonization goals.
Kallerdahl shed light on Alfa Laval's work on biofuels and methanol-ready systems, as well as its data-driven service platforms helping operators to optimize energy efficiency in real-time. DirectIndustry is confident that a cleaner, safer, and more eco-friendly shipping future can become a reality!
What TIS3 Means for Stakeholders in Industry
Although TIS3 is primarily a high-level policy jamboree, it represents a dream opportunity for industry leaders to collaborate with organizations pursuing sustainable, revolutionary ocean economies. Topics like ocean robotics, marine biotech, oceanic AI monitoring, and clean propulsion to outline some, are bound to play a significant role in shaping future ocean industries.
Technological innovation is no longer just a sideshow-it's the driving force behind the next wave of change. With TIS3 expected to pave the way for new public-private partnerships, funding frameworks, and cross-sector collaborations, it's time to brace yourself for the ocean conservation revolution! Be sure to keep tabs on DirectIndustry for updates from cutting-edge marine innovators like Beyond the Sea and Deep Search Ocean.
