Ode to the Vibrant City of Bombay by a Gentleman
Designing a Compact yet Spacious Mumbai Apartment
In the bustling city of Mumbai, a young Parsi bachelor has designed a 750 sq ft apartment that exudes a sense of spaciousness, providing a quiet retreat from the city's hustle and bustle. The apartment's design, overseen by Sapna Tapuriah, Architect and Founder of Sapscapes, was inspired by a desire for solitude and a home where the resident could put on a record and pour himself a drink.
The wardrobe in the master bedroom served as the starting point for designing the apartment. By anchoring the space around storage efficiency, mood, and mindset, it helped set a specific atmosphere and functional flow within a compact footprint.
The wardrobe design prioritized intelligent space utilization, with floor-to-ceiling modular units and efficient compartments for ethnic wear, shoes, and accessories. Using sliding or tailored modular wardrobes allowed for saving space without compromising style, integrating lighting and sleek finishes that visually elevated the room’s ambiance.
The wardrobe design also set a design language and functionality tone for the rest of the apartment's interiors, influencing the spatial flow in a compact apartment. It helped establish a psychological mindset in the apartment design, prioritizing calm, efficiency, and elegance, by reducing clutter and adding a refined, cohesive touch that supports a peaceful retreat in a busy city like Mumbai.
The apartment's layout includes one living and dining area, a compact kitchen, a powder room, a master bedroom, and a guest room that doubles as a gaming den. The design successfully creates a spacious atmosphere, giving the impression of expansiveness. The bachelor envisioned a home with a bar that felt permanent, and this was achieved by integrating a bar area seamlessly into the living room design.
The apartment's design was not intended to cater to the outside world. Instead, it was designed to provide a sanctuary for the resident, a place where he could unwind and enjoy his solitude. The design of the apartment was guided by the resident's personal preferences and lifestyle, creating a unique and personal living space in the heart of Mumbai.
