Newborn Sea Lion Pup Lío Prepared for New Home at Zoo by the Sea
A South American sea lion pup named Lío, born at Zoo by the Sea on July 26th, is currently undergoing a unique journey of preparation to start his own harem at another zoo.
Initially identified as female, Lío was later discovered to be male. This revelation added an extra layer of care to Lío's upbringing, as he would eventually maintain a harem in another zoo, following the natural behaviour of male sea lions, or 'bulls'.
In the initial days, Lío's eagerness to jump into the water caused keepers to retrieve it with a net. To help Lío adapt, he was hand-reared at Zoo by the Sea for approximately one year. During this time, Lío learned crucial skills such as climbing stairs and swimming, in a backstage area.
Lío's mother, Zoe, who was also born at Zoo by the Sea in 2008, has been a constant source of comfort and guidance for Lío. Zoe, who is generally considered a "great mother", has been even more attentive to Lío, carefully introducing him to the world.
As Lío grew, more animals were gradually reintroduced to him and his mother. The goal is to eventually reunite the entire group. On September 12th, Lío was moved from the backstage area to the outdoor enclosure, marking a significant milestone in his journey.
When Lío is fully prepared, he will be sent to another zoo to start his own harem. This process involves careful socialization, physical conditioning, and possibly behavioural training. The selection of a new zoo for his harem would ensure appropriate habitat, compatible mates, and expert care.
Lío's story is a testament to the dedication and care that Zoo by the Sea puts into the upbringing and preparation of their sea lion pups. For more detailed, specific information about Lío's current situation and preparation, we recommend consulting the official communications or social media of Zoo by the Sea or related marine animal conservation and breeding programs.
In the subsequent phase of Lío's life, he will indulge in a new lifestyle as a sea lion harem leader, moving from Zoo by the Sea to another zoo, where he can maintain his home-and-garden of female sea lions, aligning with his role as a male sea lion, or 'bull.' As Lío transitions into his new home, careful considerations will be made to provide an optimal environment, including appropriate habitat, compatible mates, and expert care.
