Parking regulations at the Mount of Olives have come to an end
The city invites residents to participate in the final action day of the 'Space Makers' project on July 30th at 6 PM at Otto-Böhne-Platz. This urban design initiative, led by Deputy Mayor Gunnar Ohrndorf (Deputy Mayor for Urban Development, Construction, and Mobility), aims to make public space more efficient and fair by demonstrating alternative uses of underutilized public spaces.
Over the action period, activities included experiments on energy transition, information on children's rights, car-sharing with discounts, discussion rounds, music evenings, shared dinners, card games, and short rests. Some residents even utilized the mobile terraces for communal activities.
Stella Schwietering, Project Manager in the Street and Traffic department, noted that the response to the 'Space Makers' was diverse, ranging from critical to positive. The city will evaluate feedback from emails, office hours, an on-site mailbox, and an online survey after dismantling the furniture.
From 7 PM on the final action day, there will be a musical "bank raid" by Rudi Rhode, Toster Maria Freitag, and friends. The musical performance will include guitar, accordion, saxophone, and singing. On the final action day, the pots will be emptied, and the plants will be planted.
The mobile furniture, loaned from the Future Network Mobility NRW, will continue to Wuppertal after the action day. The evaluation of this action will be used to further develop the 'Space Makers' project, with the ultimate goal of making cities more adaptable, equitable, and engaging for residents.
The 'Space Makers' project is part of a broader urban design movement that activates underutilized public spaces, encouraging local interaction, promoting inclusive use of space, and influencing longer-term urban planning. Previous examples of such projects have led to increased public engagement with urban spaces, enhanced community cohesion, and greater awareness among city planners and residents about flexible uses of public areas.

- After dismantling the furniture on the final action day, residents could consider transforming their home-and-garden spaces to reflect the alternative uses demonstrated by the 'Space Makers' project.
- The 'Space Makers' project birdhouses a new lifestyle approach in underutilized public spaces, promoting not just efficient use but also community engagement and creating a more adaptable and equitable living environment - similar home-and-garden projects could potentially have the same effect on personal living spaces.
