Peat-free garden will be showcased at RHS Hampton Court Garden Festival in its entirety
Anya Lautenbach, known as @anya_thegarden_fairy, is creating a unique garden for the Hampton Court Palace Garden Festival. She has joined forces with RHS Ambassador and plantsman Jamie Butterworth to present 'The Free Plant Garden'. This garden aims to show people how to create beautiful gardens without spending much money, even for those without gardens or growing plants in containers.
In 'The Free Plant Garden', Anya encourages using pruned lavender cuttings to grow new plants. From a mature lavender plant, she suggests that about 100 new plants can be grown through cuttings in spring.
The garden will feature over 2000 annuals, perennials, shrubs, and trees sourced from peat-free growers. The naturalistic planting of the garden mimics an untouched peatland, reflecting the garden's commitment to sustainability.
Arit Anderson, another RHS Ambassador, is the designer of the RHS Peat-Free Garden. This garden is 100% peat-free, aligning with the festival's focus on environmental consciousness. The RHS recognizes the challenges designers face with residual traces of peat found in plants and aims to help shine a light on the issue of peat use and empower gardeners and industry to bring about change.
The RHS Peat-Free Garden will host talks and workshops on the origins of growing mediums, peat-free sowing and propagating, and watering peat-free potted plants. The garden will also include shady and sun-loving borders, providing a diverse display of flora.
All materials used in the design of both gardens have been recycled. This includes a greenhouse, paving, old railway sleepers, a disused beehive (insect hotel), and two large water butts.
Growers supplying the gardens include Golden Valley Plants, Rjinbeek, Farplants, and Hilliers.
The Hampton Court Palace Garden Festival runs from 2-7 July 2024. For those interested in events at the festival, more information can be found on their official website.
'The Free Plant Garden' will showcase how to grow plants for free and save money in the garden. It's a must-visit for anyone looking to create a beautiful garden without breaking the bank.
